Summary of PTA Activities and Volunteer Opportunities
Hike for Hillandale
A fall PTA fundraising event held during the school day. It is a 1 mile hike through the woods around the school, designed to encourage physical activity and an appreciation for nature. All students collect donations from friends or family sponsors.
Volunteer opportunities: participate on the planning committee to plan the event, communicate with families and coordinate activities with the school, help seek business donations, be a general volunteer the day of the event or accompany your child’s class on the hike.
Reflections Art Program
A National PTA program that encourages children’s creativity through different forms of art media including writing, drawing and photography. Any Hillandale student can submit work in early November to be reviewed at the local level, with selected works moving on to the state and national level. All participating children are recognized for their submissions
Volunteer opportunities: serve as the liaison with the Durham PTA organizers, help coordinate the process at Hillandale and communicate with children, parents, and teachers.
Share your contact information with your child’s teacher and let them know you want to be a Classroom Parent. Talk with your classroom teacher to see how you can help.
Volunteer opportunities: Reading to the class, sending in special supplies for classroom events, and working with teachers to communicate class activities to classroom families.
Family Reading Night
Family Reading Night night is held on a Friday evening in February in the Media Center. Children can come in their pajamas to read books, see friends and listen to a story read by the principal.
Volunteer opportunities: coordinate or support the planning of the event, sit at the welcome table to register participants, or help tally the number of books read that night.
A week long event, mainly during school hours, held in the Media Center. Families have opportunities to purchase books for their children or for classroom libraries.
Volunteer opportunities: help coordinate with our school librarian and communicate with children, parents, and teachers, come in the Media Center to set up, take down or help students and families purchase books.
Teacher & Staff Appreciation Luncheons
Throughout the year, the PTA hosts three teacher and staff appreciation luncheons.
Volunteer opportunities: Contribute part of the meal or side dish, help set up and clean up, or sit with your child’s class during lunch so his or her teacher can enjoy the luncheon.
Science day is a day-long learning event held during the school day in the early spring. Science stations are set up throughout the school for the younger grades for the first half of the day and the older grades the second half of the day. It includes an interactive assembly led by a local scientist.
Volunteer opportunities: participate on the planning committee, lead or support a science station, coordinate volunteers by grade, be a general volunteer the day of the event or accompany your child’s class to the varying stations.
Hillandale Early Learning Program
Consistently throughout the year, support individual students who need special attention in various areas of learning.
Volunteer opportunities: Required completion of DPS Volunteer Form prior to beginning weekly appointments with assigned student.
Spring Fling is usually held on a Saturday. Although the theme and activities vary each year, this is a spring fundraising event that celebrates the Hillandale community and its many cultures with performances, food vendors, games, inflatables, and a silent auction.
Volunteer opportunities: participate on the planning committee to lead the coordination of the games, food, performances, or silent auction. You and your children can also be a part of the performances, help seek donations, or volunteer the day of the event.
5th Grade Celebration
Hillandale holds several end-of-year activities including the 5th Grade Celebration, which is a luncheon and dance usually held on the Wednesday during the last week of school.
Volunteer opportunities: participate on the planning committee to select a theme, catered meal, and DJ. You can also help decorate the gym and serve food the day of the event.
Dining for Dollars
Earn money for Hillandale by patronizing local restaurants on designated evenings throughout the year. These restaurants donate a portion of your bill to the Hillandale PTA.
Volunteer opportunities: Call resturants in our area to see if they would be interested, coordinate with the PTA Board to schedule and publicise, work with the treasurer.
This is a social activity usually held on a Friday evening in September to provide an opportunity to meet other Hillandale families while picnicking on the lawn.
Volunteer opportunities: schedule, welcome and arrange payment for the band, publicize the event, organize food truck vendors.
Ongoing Opportunities include counting Box Tops, making copies, and updating the Marquee Sign.
